Technology has bloomed like a flower in the last few years. In the mainframe days, when there were standard architectures that were driven by few vendors and were managed by the handful of people. This left the developers with few choices for infrastructure and programming languages. When we moved to the client-server era, infrastructure configuration became compelling and many organizations opted for three-tier architecture. This gave the developers with a choice of an array of programming languages and each layer of the architecture (web, application, database, middleware etc.) had various specialists. This resulted in increased complexity in tradeoffs. They now had flexibility in the nature of applications that they could build. They could now build and deliver the software at a lower cost and with more velocity. This had one disadvantage too, managing these n – tier architecture had more operational costs and needed a diverse set of skills to support various layers.

As there has been an increase in the adoption of the cloud, there has been an all-time high in the complexity and the tradeoffs have been really intense. Balancing complexity and agility

 

Since there is a high demand to providing services to the clients at a fast pace and our architectures are complex enough, they provide us the opportunity to connect and build highly available solutions around mobile computing, cloud computing, big data solutions and Iot in a fraction of the time. These architectures are very distributed and are enduring and virtual. This is a big change from previous physical, inflexible and large architectures that supported the software that we built.

The architectures that we work on today are flexible in nature and more involved in the virtual scale of mainframes and client-server architectures. Engineers these days being trained to deal with vertical architectures and very less experience in building horizontal architectures. Organizations traditionally are skilled in building n-tier architecture and managing back-office applications which require parallel processing and scalability which very few organizations have an experience in to build those applications.

This creates a big roadblock for the organization as they see a new opportunity that could benefit them but they have very little experience and expertise in this space and decide to build it on their own. To complete their own project they have to go through a long process of training and learning. This sometimes results in the late submission or delay in delivering the project. To add to it, IT departments are spending a huge amount of time to build up clouds, mobile platforms and other services that can provide great value to the business. They try to provide those services that are up to the mark and provide them a competitive edge over the competitors.

They focus on things that are not the core competencies of the business and they rather focus on developing things that are not of critical value. Rather than focusing on things that are critical value propositions to the business like speed to market, customer satisfaction etc they focus on trying to understand every technology under the sun that might not be necessary for the business at the very moment.

Where does IT add value?

 

The real way in which IT adds value to the organization is the way they have a deep understanding of the business and the way that provide cost-effective technological solutions to the business partners. But in some ways, IT is considered as a cost center for the organization because sometimes instead of focusing on the core business services that the organization provides they focus on other things that might not be necessary at that moment. I would say that every organization should make a reference architecture diagram that clearly states the services that the business needs to support their services and focus on building those services. Everything else can be transferred to Managed Service Providers (MSP’s) to manage and run.

In the end, I would like to say that IT department of every organization needs to figure out how they can add value to the organization and deliver quickly on the core services of the organization. If due to some reason they are not able to deliver on these services they should find those vendors who can deliver those services as their core competencies and you can spend your time in building your business as per your core objectives.
