Determining the Future of Database Performance Monitoring: To the Cloud and Beyond

It is an integral task for every database administrator to have a guarantee that their databases that are running on the cloud are running and performing at their best. Since we live in a generation, where everything is available in just a few instances customers, partners and stakeholders have low patience level with website or application downtime. Ensuring consistency and Optimization in database performance play a pivotal role in avoiding Website Downtime. Maintenance of this level of performance requires right types of tools that are capable enough to manage, monitor and detect issues that arise in the database even before it becomes an issue for them.

But how do we know that your database performance monitoring system is keeping up in a world that is driven by the cloud? Let us explore two trends that will drive innovation in database management and monitoring in the future.

Modernize your cloud infrastructure in 3 steps

According to a research done by Bain and company, the global spending is predicted to rise from $180 billion in 2015 to $ 390 billion in 2020. Experts state that the reasons for the openness in cloud adoption are innovation, cost, and agility. As cloud computing provides a business with the competitive advantage that helps them to grow quickly with minimum cost and manageable infrastructure expenses.

We think that though there has been an augmented growth in cloud computing, cloud technologies are still in its formative years. We think that most organizations do not use the cloud to replace their existing infrastructure completely; they use it for the relatively small portion of their requirements. There is still a huge amount of untapped potential to modernize the capabilities of using the cloud and using up to date infrastructure.

In the earlier days, the IT infrastructure of a particular client was handled entirely on client premises. But as IT operations have evolved and have started supporting different business needs, this model has not been capable in terms of scalability and cost-effectiveness.

With the arrival of Remote Infrastructure Management in the last decade, there has been a transformation in the field of technology for organizations as now they have an advantage in cost through resources augmentation approach. Over a period of time, there have been innovations that have been made in the field of technology and their technological processes which in turn have led to the advancement of end – to – end infrastructure solutions who in fact have acted as a strategic enabler for CIO’s and have offered more benefits than just cost arbitrage. These infrastructure solutions deliver higher turnaround time, availability & efficiency with a compelling value proposition.

WHAT IS THE IMPACT OF NETWORK AND OR SERVER DOWNTIME ON YOUR BUSINESS?

Despite huge progress has been made in the field of technology and there has been a tremendous advancement in infrastructure robustness, many organizations still face the deadly issue of database, hardware and software downtime which can last short periods of time or can go to long periods too resulting in shutting down of business. Despite mounting to statistics and making extensive strategies that predict and touch nearly every situation whether related to major enterprise software, vendor, and customer, from ERP to CRM and various others, just bringing up the topic of outages still terrifies those in the industry.

Cloud Computing – A History

The origins of cloud computing trace back to 1960’s, when the computing industry identified the potential benefits of delivering computing as a service or utility as a whole.

However, early computing days lacked the connectivity and bandwidth that were required to enforce computing that was required to enforce computing as a utility or service. It wasn’t until there was an extensive bandwidth available in the late 1990’s that providing computing as a utility or service became more practical and a reality.

As Internet connections got faster and more reliable in the late 1990’s, a new type of company called Application Service Provider or ASP started to appear. These service providers took existing business applications and ran them for their customers. The ASP’s bought the computing hardware and kept the application running, and the customers would pay a monthly fee to access this computing hardware’s over the Internet.

Cloud Computing and its benefits

Being able to diagnose errors, latency and application logs are some of the important factors that are required to understand failures; which can both be a tedious and daunting task.  It takes a lot of time to go through stacks of files and data just to look for the reason of failures and lack in services. There are times where all the required information is not available at one place and it is impossible to track them. This leads to a challenging task of finding the data and then implementing it to solve the problem that arose. This is where cloud computing comes into play.

Cloud computing is a computing infrastructure and software model that ensures unlimited access to a pool of resources (like computer networks, servers, storage & applications). These resources can be easily administered with minimal efforts, usually over the internet.

Trends shaping IT cloud strategies today

Many organizations have transformed their IT practices in the recent years with the help of Cloud computing, but recently experts stated that the technology market is once again entering the second wave of public, private and hybrid cloud services.

According to a recent survey done by Forrester Research, 38 percent of organizations decision-makers have admitted that they are building private clouds, out of these 32 percent of the organizations are procuring public cloud services and the remainders of the lot are planning to implement some form of cloud technology very soon. The implementation of hybrid cloud is also increasing rapidly; with 59 percent of respondents of the survey are stating that they are adopting the model. The need for enterprises to scale their computing resources to serve its customers better is adding fuel to the fire of accelerating adoption of this model.

Cloud computing services can be of three type’s private, public or hybrid.

Private cloud services are those services that can be delivered from a business’s data center to internal users. It offers the adaptability and accessibility of the cloud while retaining its management, control, and security to local data centers and being common for all. Internal users may or may not be billed for services through IT chargeback. Common private cloud technologies and its vendors include VMware and OpenStack.

In the public cloud model, a third-party cloud service provider is chosen who delivers the cloud services over the internet. These services are sold on demand, typically by a minute or by an hour, even though there are long-term commitments available for many services. Organizations pay for the CPU cycles, storage or bandwidth they consume in a particular timeframe.Leading public cloud service providers are Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure, IBM and Google Cloud Platform.
